Student Media Wins SCJ Awards

The Society for Collegiate Journalists announced both individual and media winners in its national contest. Individuals who worked on the Technician, Agromeck and WKNC received awards. The Agromeck yearbook received the top award for overall excellence. WKNC.org won overall excellence for companion website. Six NCSU students won individual awards.

To be eligible to enter the contest, students had to be members of the Society for Collegiate Journalists meaning they had to have at least a 3.0 grade point average.

Chris Hondros, 1970-2011

Chris Hondros was killed on the morning of WEdnesday, April 20, 2011, while photographing in Mistrata, Libya. He majored in English in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at NC State and graduated in 1993, and served as a photographer for the Technician. A memorial display of his photos is currently installed at the Gregg Museum of Art & Design on the second floor of Talley Student Center. The display will be up through April 28.

Talley Student Center Renovation and Expansion

The new Talley Student Center will reflect N.C. State's reputation as an institution of innovation and advancement. When the renovation is complete, students will have more places to hang out or study, and new dining choices at later hours. They will also be able to browse an expanded bookstore and other retail operations while waiting for an event in one of the new multi-sized assembly spaces to begin. We invite you to view images of the architectural model and floor plans.

If you are concerned about the implications of construction, please come to a Town Hall Meeting on Monday, April 25 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Talley North Ballroom. If you have questions about the project or wish to view the architectural model, please come to Talley Table Talk Day on Tuesday, April 26 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the first floor lobby of Talley Student Center. Student Health Center: 24,000 Square Feet Larger

The addition to the Student Health Center is complete and operational. The new space makes it possible to meet our students' growing demand for quality medical and wellness care. During the next phase of the project, we will renovate the original 17,000 square feet of the Student Health Center. We are excited about all the new services we will be able to provide as a result of this expansion. Student Health, the Counseling Center, Health Promotion, and the Disability Services Office will all be fully operational in the new facility by Fall 2011.

Congratulations to Jennifer Bell

The Association of Higher Education Parent/Family Program Professionals (AHEPPP) Board of Directors elected Jennifer Bell to serve a two-year term as Vice Chair, and a subsequent two-year term as Chair. Jennifer helped found AHEPPP and has served on the Board of Directors since 2008. As Vice Chair, Jennifer will work with the Board to coordinate regional and national conferences, recruit members, and develop benefits.

TRIO Programs Receives Grant for New Program

Student Support Services was newly funded September 1, 2010. It is a collegiate educational support program funded by the U.S. Department of Education, and is one of three TRIO programs at NC State University. The program's mission is to encourage and enhance educational opportunities by providing unique and personalized academic services to enhance their academic skills, increase their retention and graduation rates, and as appropriate, facilitate entrance into graduate and professional programs.
