2012 Frank Ormond Scholarship Recipient

The recipient of the inaugural Frank Ormond Scholarship is Shaun Fisher. Shaun is a US Navy veteran and an avid water sports fan in the Outdoor Leadership Minor Program. Not only does Shaun have an impressive academic record, but his passion for outdoor sports makes him an inspirational candidate for this year's scholarship award. Congratulations Shaun!

Racquetball Tournament at NC State

NC State University hosted – and won -- the first annual Mid Atlantic Collegiate Racquetball Conference championships (MACRC). Both the men’s and women’s teams clinched the championships for their divisions, leading NC State to win the overall team championship.

Exercise and ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a developmental disorder with symptoms that include inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. Recently, studies utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have suggested that exercise may elicit positive effects for those with ADHD.

Welcome to Physical Education

In 1923, N.C. State's Department of Physical Education was established upon authorization of the Board of Trustees. Since that time, the university has developed and expanded its unique physical education program under the leadership of eight department heads and numerous faculty. Physical Education works closely with the Department of University Recreation to provide NC State students with diverse opportunities for learning both inside and outside of the classroom.

There are 100 courses offered through courses at the 100 level (fitness & wellness), 200 level (skill activity), and 300/400 level (specialized). Examples of fitness and skill courses offered are: Run Conditioning, Aerobics, Water Aerobics, Triathlon, Swim Conditioning, Fitness Walking, Indoor Group Cycling, Yoga, Pilates, Weight Training, Scuba, Equitation, Dance, Tennis, Racquetball, Badminton, Bowling, Canoeing, Whitewater Rafting, Mountaineering, Backpacking, Rock Climbing, Sea Kayaking, Fly Fishing, Softball, Flag Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee, Soccer, Fencing, and Swimming.

Undergraduate students are required to complete two semesters of Physical Education to meet the university GEP requirement. This includes a 100-level course and one additional course from either the 100 or 200-level.

Four specialties are offered in the department's Minor Program (Coaching, Health, Outdoor Education, & Sport Science) through 30 courses, with an Emergency Medicine Program in development with the Department of Biology.

Over 685 classes are taught each year through 100 different course offerings. Instruction is offered to more than 15,000 students on campus, and 1,450 students via distance education.
