Emergency Medicine

PEH/BIO 300 ( Emergency Medical Technician Basic is the first of five new courses that will be offered to provide students with advanced emergency response skills. These courses are a collaboration of the Departments of Physical Education and Biological Science and are projected for incorporation into a new Emergency Medicine Technician Science concentration or track within Biological Science in conjunction with the Physical Education Health minor. These courses will be electives for the existing Physical Education Health minor and Human Biology concentrations for students interested in allied health care and emergency medicine careers.

Successful completion of PEH/BIO 300 should provide students with the knowledge and skills to be eligible to take the State of North Carolina and the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic Exam. Successful completion of the State of North Carolina and the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Basic Exam will result in licensure and certification that will facilitate the student's employment opportunities and enhance competitiveness for graduate programs.

Course topics include: Roles and responsibilities of the EMT; Medical/Legal considerations of Emergency Medical Services (EMS); Respiratory/Cardiac emergencies; CPR; Practical use of airway adjuncts; Bleeding and shock; Trauma management; Medical emergencies and their management; Environmental emergencies; Emergency childbirth; Pediatrics; Geriatrics; Exposure to hazardous situations; Introduction to hazardous materials; Psychological emergencies; Patient packaging and triage; Stabilization and transport of the sick and injured; Communication and report writing. Additional time and fees are required for certification.

All courses will be taught under the Wake EMS System Teaching Institute. The lead instructor for the EMT educational program will be a North Carolina-credentialed EMS instructor at the EMT level or higher as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission.
